It depends on where you live. Private insurance varies widely in terms of cost. If you are looking for State assistance, such as medicaid, you will (as of July 1) need to provide proof of legal residency or citizenship (passport, SS#, birth certifcate) as well as proof of income and an attestation of your assets (i.e if you own a car, home, etc.) Each state has its own rules for income and assets in terms of qualification for aid. Kaiser also provide low cost insurance (Kaiser Kids) if you can't afford their regular premiums. Again, you have to demonstrate need.
